Grown Folk Sh*t

Grown Folk Sh*t is swass. Nuff Respect for Ikah Love for having the bozak in bringing high quality funk & soul to a sleepy city. Every Thursday El Dorado Bar, Ikah Love hosts this venue with musical styles essential to upward living in a somewhat, soon to be scarce metropolis. Those who recall the early 90’s “Acid-Jazz” substance of The Green Circle bar with DJ Greyboy, can find solace here. Past guests include Pete Rock, DJ Numark, Miles of Breakstra/Root Down, & monthly resident DJ Greyboy. In the next few weeks, you can catch Stones Throw ambassadors Mayer Hawthorne & Dam-Funk (thats right DAM-FUNK), as well I myself (shameless plug), so you know where to find the funk. If the places you frequent make you feel out of place and all “grown-up,” it’s not that you’re out of style, it’s because you HAVE style; Grown Folk Style. Show your style accordingly.

My Loft Vol. 1Since we all can’t travel back in time to hear Larry Levan @ The Paradise Garage, or David Mancuso at The Loft, we can sample a taste of what those days meant to nightclubs today. An essential mix for those in the know, and those who should. My homie DJ Destroyer doin his thing; here.

Michael Jackson: Truly Immortal

25 06 2009

As this legend has past, I can’t help but reminisce that Thriller was one of the first cassettes I ever bought. As a DJ, Michael’s songs were pivotal and worth their weight in platinum. His songs remain in my crates to this day and forever more. Some may frown on his unique and controversial personal life, but you simply can’t deny the immense talent he shared with the world. Truly sad he has passed on, but may we judge no more and just remember his legacy as one of the world’s best talents and the all time King of Pop

Type Nerds Rejoice!!

1 06 2009

helvetica-posterAlthough I am a type nerd, I’m late on this one. But by the grace and beauty of Netflix, I geeked our on this…Helvetica (the film) documents the history of this ubiquitous typeface and offers personal insights from a various graphic designers, and explores the universal importance to our society. Folks who think typeface is not relevant to everyday life are probably the same people who think derogatory lyrics in rap music don’t matter. I’m jus sayin. Rent it, buy it, watch, love it, live it. I love this typeface (font). Nuff said.

Anthony Hamilton Live!!!

12 12 2008

antham3

As far as the Myx is concerned, Anthony Hamilton is THEE MAN right now in the world of R&B/Soul. Solid LPs, multiple Grammy Nominations, and fluid consistency. As a thoughtful, honest, and talented songwriter, this cat is definitely one of the greats in line with Marvin, Quincy, Stevie and the late Norman Whitfield. And thus, I am honored to be playing an opening set for his show on 12.12.08 at the House of Blues San Diego. I’ve personally never seen him live yet, but I guarantee his performance will be solid. Check out his own blog or myspace page. And if you’re in San Diego, definitely DO NOT miss this show!!
